Past Pupil inspired
by his time at St Mary’s

Past pupil Mr Robert Murray from Greyabbey spent a week in St Mary’s with our primary 6.

Robert is currently undertaking his PGCE at the University of Ulster at Coleraine. The children thoroughly enjoyed the week with Mr Murray and the highlight was undoubtedly when they made clay tiles as part of their topic work. The tiles have to be painted and should be on their way home to adorn the primary 6 houses later in the month. At the end of the week Mr Murray stated that he was having second thoughts about specializing in secondary teaching.

The children all agree that they had a wonderful week and that Mr Murray has inspired some of them to become potters. Many were amazed at Mrs Fowler’s new found talent!

Book Fair a Big Red Success

StripmineThe annual book club raised around £700 pounds worth of free books for the school.

The annual book club raised around £700 pounds worth of free books for the school. All the pupils had a wonderful time browsing through the many fabulous book on offer. For some the choice was agonising and their pleading with parents to buy two books could be heard every morning and afternoon.

At the end of the week Clifford The Big Red Dog paid a visit to the book fair and was very impressed by all the primary one pupils who came up to say hello and shake his hand. Mr Dorrian knew that this was the real Clifford because Emily Elizabeth brought him and she was in the staffroom having a cup of tea with the teachers at break time.

A big thank you to all the parents who bought books and supported the school!!!

Work to improve safety and
security at St Mary’s begins.

We were all very sad to see our lovely trees being felled at the end of September. When  we get the new car park and fence it will improve safety for all our pupils which is most important.

We even received a phone call from a lady who shared our sadness at losing the trees! However at the end of the work there will be a special tree planting ceremony to replace the trees. This time they will be planted at the back and side of the school where they can grow in the years to come. We will replace the trees with the same species: ash, beech, poplar, sycamore and eucalyptus. Each class will plant a tree.

Already the school is much more visible to the local community which we hope will deter vandalism and from the playground the children can also catch a glimpse of Kircubbin harbour!
