Foundation Stage News

What was formerly known as Primary One and Primary Two are now known as the Foundation Stage.

As part of this new approach the children learn through play and doing things which interest them. Our topic has been Autumn Harvest and the children have been busy learning all about the various things that happen in our wonderful world at this time of year.

As well as the usual Autumn walks the children had a visit from farmer Tony Bell. Tony had promised to bring his combine into school so that all the Foundation Stage pupils could have a closer look at a very important autumn machine. Sadly due to the bad weather the combine is still stuck in a field. However Tony being a father of young children himself knew the disappointment this would cause and he brought in his self propelled crop sprayer. Tony gave a very entertaining lesson on how he grows wheat on his and explained that the sprayer was used to give medicine to any crops that are sick. The next stage of the story was when the farmer’s wife (Mrs Mary McCarthy) brought in some ground wheat and made bread with the help of the Primary 2 children.

Primary 1 class sorted fruit and made a big apple crumble to end the topic! While the Primary two children sorted vegetable and made a big pot of vegetable soup to go with the bread they had baked. They all agree the new curriculum is a fun and tasty! way to learn!

Hello I'm Marcus

StripmineThe visit of President Mary McAleese was a very big event for all the P4 – P7 children.

They were very enthusiastic about her visit and entertained her with a variety of songs. Some pupils were lucky enough to meet her personally. But star of the show was Marcus from primary 4 who had been sick all morning before the visit. Marcus was on his way back from the toilet when he had the chance meeting. One witness heard him strike up a conversation with “Hello President I’m Marcus!” As you can see from the photo there followed a very natural and lively discussion. Marcus says “ I am glad I didn’t stay at home. She was a very nice lady.!”

Halloween Festivities

All the children dressed up on Wednesday 29th October in Halloween costumes.

They ranged from great to absolutely fantastic. A big thank you to all the parents. However the biggest surprise was yet to come when after break when all the staff dressed up to celebrate with the children. Mr Dorrian said “I was delighted when the staff put the idea to me, as it shows the kind of relationships that are in the school now. I really appreciate the way in which the entire staff think about ways to make the children feel happy and relaxed in school. This I feel is the key to a happy learning environment. The fact that every one from dinner ladies right through to teachers got involved was great.”
