Carrickfergus Castle

As part of our new Topic, we visited Carrickfergus Castle, with our friends from Greyabbey. This trip was amazing!!!

Carrickfergus Castle was built by John de Courcy, and he lived there with his wife Affreca. Did you know that when John was away, Affreca would get lonely and her favourite place to come and stay was Greyabbey?

We were able to see lots of interesting things about how castles were built.

Did you know that there was a murder hole up in the porch ceiling, where they would pour hot sand and tar down on top of you, if you were trying to break in??? OUCH!!!! Did you know that part of the castle was called the Oblique- this is a French word which means to ‘forget’. It was called oblique because this was a dungeon where they would throw prisoners, and often they forgot they were even there and they died of hunger!!! Oh dear!!!

We saw a real like Knight called Mark, who taught us all about weapons and armour. This trip was really brilliant, it was exciting and interesting, and we would definitely go back!!!
