Celebrating Differences

Both St Mary’s and Victoria Primary 2 classes are looking forward to their big night entitled “Celebrating Difference” which will be held in May in St Mary’s.

Part if their preparation involved working together in Ballyhalbert to create artwork related to their topic. This will displayed in the school hall for their parents and other visitors, and should illustrate how the children perceive their community. The venture was organised by CRIS, and is the first time that they have worked with such young children. The children enjoyed the painting workshops, and created some wonderful representations of their community, which will have pride of place in our school hall for their celebration.

Lá na Scoileanna

During the month of April everyone at St Mary’s celebrated  Lá Na Scoileanna, which marked the 125th Year of the GAA in Ireland.

The day started off with each pupil and member of staff coming to school dressed in their favourite GAA colours. As you can see from the photograph Kilkenny was well represented as was County Down.
Conor O’Toole from Comhairle Uladh visited the younger classes and the teachers used the GAA lesson pack to teach maths and history lessons on the GAA.

Working with the National Trust

Primary 4 & 5 had a very exciting morning working with wardens from the National Trust as part of a study of their locality.

They wrapped up warmly and headed down to the beach for a litter pick. The purpose of this venture was to teach the children how harmful litter can be for the environment, especially for animals & sea creatures. The children were amazed to see the amount of litter which had been dropped, and vowed they would from now on encourage others to dispose of their unwanted rubbish more responsibly. It was a very successful morning for children and adults alike!
